Project summary

Overall project objectives:

The project will assess the potential of modern biotechnology to deliver effective bio-additives which can accelerate decomposition processes and extend the lifetime of pit latrines. It will also build a sound scientific understanding of the key factors influencing decomposition processes, including the potential of pit design to improve fill rates and longevity. At the same time, research will be undertaken to build a deeper understanding of the current user experience, needs and aspirations of on-site sanitation that can be used to inspire improved, lower cost onsite sanitation options for the poor.

WASH R&D Centre involvement:

  • To develop a report that summarises the key findings (results and techniques) of the ‘Pit Research’ that was under taken by the University of KwaZulu Natal in the past years, highlighting approaches to sampling and recommending key physico-chemical and biological factors to be measured in worktreams 2 and 3 ( by May 2010) .  The report should also include reference to any devices enabling in-situ measurements to be taken without sample removal.
  • To test and evaluate the applicability of the scanner as measure of assessing pit fill-up and decomposition rates. To deliver at least one working scanner with supporting systems  and a report detailing its use and validation (August 2010).
  • To carry out a small piece of consumer research with the aim of establishing current practices and the extent to which commercially available pit-additives are currently used by pit-latrine users.
  • To provide advice and support as required.
