Up until 2025, when a 5-year partnership agreement was signed between UKZN and the South African Water Research Commission, the WASH R&D Centre was a fully externally funded research centre. The majority of our funding still comes from various local and international organisations, with key funders being the Water Research Commission, the eThekwini Municipality, and the Gates Foundation. Additional funding has been received from other research funding organisations, the private sector and WASH stakeholders. 

The Centre strongly believes in collaborative research and has formed numerous close partnerships, thus enabling access to further funding and building research capacity.
