Under the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, UKZN (PRG) together with eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS) provided data acquisition and field support for prototype development. During Phase II it was found that the laboratory was operating at its physical and equipment capacity (i.e. the demand was exceeding the capacity). The purpose of this grant was therefore to increase the laboratory and pilot plant facilities, increase the analytical capabilities, and extend the range of tests that could be undertaken.  

It was also identified that the greatest risk to the continued operation of the laboratory during field testing, once fully equipped, was that health and safety regulations could be violated because of the increased volume of samples and analysis that would be handled. The building modifications and upgrades therefore addressed these risks.  

The outcome of the investment was therefore to provide an improved service to developers of BMGF funded prototypes during field testing. It also provided the facilities for the production of datasets of excreta characteristics for sanitation practitioners, BMGF or otherwise. Additionally, it created a location for grantees and practitioners from other countries to be trained in analytical and experimental techniques related to sanitation.
