Project code: TBC

April 2022 - March 2024

Lead Organisation: WASH R&D Centre

Partner organisations: UKZN Chemical Engineering; UKZN Mechanical Engineering; UKZN Crop Science, Swedish Univeristy of Agriculture; Sanitation360; Vaal University of Technology; BAAS Technology and Consulting; Ethekwini Water and Sanitation; Envirosan Sanitation Solutions

Funded by: Water Research Commission

Project summary

The proposed project is about the development of a cost-effective urine evaporator that could be incorporated into re- engineered toilets like the one developed by Sanitation360 and others from the WRC SASTEP platform. The primary outcome from this project will be developing a urine evaporator that will provide a low-cost urine treatment solution to the back-end of re-engineered toilets. As secondary outcome, this project will bring a better understanding of the urine evaporation process to the sanitation technology developers and provide information for the design of efficient urine evaporation systems. South Africa will be the ultimate beneficiary from this project by the increment of the sanitation technologies catalogue available in the country and the improvement of the existing technologies by offering a technological solution to treat urine that will facilitate their commercialization.
