Yuri Ramruthan obtained her BSc and BSc Honours Degree in Environmental Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Currently she is completing her master’s in chemical engineering, under the Supervision of Dr Santiago Septien.
Project title: Characterization of faecal material waste from rural schools’ onsite sanitation systems, for its safe disposal and optimal valorization
Project description: This study intends to characterize faecal material (faecal sludge and faeces) from rural schools’ onsite sanitation, to aid design engineers and technological developers in creating better sanitation facilities, innovative emptying, and treatment technologies. Based on the characteristics of faecal matter, data will be established that assists in the optimal valorization of faecal sludge, producing organic and inorganic products, such as biochar, and fertilizer.
