While 2.6 billion of the world population lack adequate sanitation facilities, there is a 2.7 billion people that use onsite sanitation facilities. In these onsite sanitation facilities the faeacal sludge accumulates over the years, currently the unsustainable management practices are employed which include stockpiles and landfill disposal. Conservatively, there are at least 5 million Ventilated Improved Pit latrines (VIPs) in South Africa producing approximately one million cubic meters of VIP faecal sludge per annum. Faecal sludge is classified as an infectious hazardous waste. Since the new political disposition in the country, most of the sanitation service effort to the previously un-serviced areas has been the provision of VIPs. In the haste to provide VIPs, very little thought has gone into how they are to be serviced and how the sludge produced from these VIPs is to be safely disposed. Significant work has been done on faecal sludge by researchers including the characterisation of physical- chemical properties, developing sanitation chain and developing Iso standards etc however the manner in which faecal sludge is collected and disposed is not regulated by guiding principles. This projects seeks to develop guidelines for faecal sludge collection and subsequent disposal or valorisation that regulatory authorities, managers and practitioners responsible for faecal sludge management can easily understand and incorporate as part of their service provision operations. These Guidelines will be divided in three categories (i) guidelines for collection of faecal sludge from Onsite sanitation facilities; (ii) guideline for utilisation of faecal sludge from onsite sanitation facilities and (iii) guidelines for the disposal of faecal sludge from onsite sanitation facilities. These guidelines will bring forth safe disposal of faecal sludge from various on-site sanitation facilities contributing towards improved faecal sludge management; improved products / valuable materials extracted from faecal sludge from onsite facilities and new innovation / technologies towards utilisation of faecal sludge.
