Project summary

South Africa faces significant challenges with respect to limited water supply, deteriorating water quality, poorly operated, maintained and overloaded water infrastructure, a shortage of skilled personnel and continuing backlogs in water and sanitation services delivery. Improving wastewater management from collection to treatment to effluent discharge and re-use is a critical part of addressing these challenges. Modelling and data integration are powerful tools which municipalities can use to better understand and manage their wastewater systems however they have a substantial learning curve. The Process Engineering Services (PES) section of eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS) has recently established a process modelling group with support from UKZN with the ambitious long term aim of developing an integrated model of the metro’s entire wastewater system, eventually including sewers, treatment works and rivers. It is intended to be a decision support system for the municipality to plan and manage all aspects related to wastewater. If successful, this initiative will be an important example for other large South African municipalities to follow. The proposed project will develop training materials and provide modelling support for the EWS initiative as well the modelling group at Umgeni water and document their progress. After testing the methodology, training and support will be offered to other municipalities and a sustainable support structure for building wastewater management modelling capacity with be established through a WISA specialist group and a dedicated website for sharing instructional materials, modelling tools and case studies.
