South Africa is a water-scarce country where a proportion of its population still lack access to improved water and sanitation services. Conventional sanitation technologies have not solved the issues in the water and sanitation sector. Over the years, there have been significant losses along the value chain as a result of open defecation,spillage (due to poor infrastructure), illegal dumping, ineffective treatment and environmental pollution. In turn, these losses have heightened the need for innovative solutions, technologies, and processes to address the existing services backlogs. Non-sewered sanitation (NSS) technologies can potentially provide improved sustainable, safe and efficient solutions that require minimal resources and upkeep. The South African Technologies Enterprise Programme (SASTEP) provides a platform to foster the improved up-scaling and deployment of NSS technologies across the country particularly in under-served rural and peri-urban areas of smaller municipalities, which is a criticalelement of addressing the current challenge. The Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Research & Development Centre (WASH R&D Centre) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), in collaboration with eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS), and other local sanitation consulting businesses, has undertaken various projects primarily funded through the Water Research Commission (WRC), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) which funds through SASTEP, the evaluation of innovative sanitation solutions that match local needs within the overall South African context. This project aims to create a platform to develop a next generation sanitation network within South Africa and Africa, while providing advisory extension services on policy, procurement, regulations, bylaws and desktop technical evaluations to co-ordinate the sanitation system.
