Project summary

This project was an extension of the project: Increased reach of facael sludge management education, under which an online course was run in 2016. This project aimed to re-run the course (with some modifications), and to investigate how the course could be incorporated into the UKZN curriculum. The course was run from February to May 2018.

A total of 360 learners enrolled with a majority from sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia. 35 % of those who enrolled were female. In total, 46 Certificates of Completion were issued to learners whose final grade was 60 % and above and 18 Certificates of Attendance issued to those whose final grade was below 60 %. The remaining 296 learners received a Certificate of Registration.  The completion rate for the FSM OLC (percentage of enrolled learners who finished the course with either a Certification of Completion or a Certificate of Attendance) was 18 %.

Discussions with UKZN led to the course being offered as an elective module for 4th year Chemical Engineering students in the second half of 2019.
