The project aims to collect data from three key sources namely; a Pyrolysis machine which will be used to process municipal sanitation sludge, toilet usage patterns from two community ablution blocks, and environmental information from river catchments. Samples will be taken from each of these sources for analysis, as well as through the installation of meters and sensors. The data will be collected by means of satellite systems followed by analysis using a smart sanitation data management platform using AI and machine learning. The data analysis will provide insight into community health and will allow for the development of early warning systems to detect the onset of diseases.
EWS are interested to test the pyrolysis machine to reduce the stockpile of WWTW sludge by converting it to biochar. EWS have stated that the system cannot be operated by in-house staff at this stage. Thus they would like the system to be tested by the Engineering Field Testing platform with resources provided by UKZN and Khanyisa Projects.
