Pillay, Reneshree (Ms)

MSc candidate

Reneshree Pillay obtained her BTech in Chemical Engineering from the Durban University of Technology in 2011. She was employed by Improchem, a company that provides innovative, high quality, safe, integrated water, energy, air and hygiene solutions. Whilst at Improchem, Reneshree worked at 2 major refineries in KZN where she involved in Utilities Management.

She was then employed by eThekwini Municipality as a Chemical Technician and thereafter progressed to her current position as a Works Area Manager. Her key function is the management of four Wastewater Treatment Works within the Umgeni Area, so as to comply with the statutory requirements of the National Water Act (No. 36 of 1998). This involves troubleshooting, optimization, design, operation and maintenance, contract management, budgets as well as management of staff.

Research

Project title: Comparison of thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic digestion

Project description: A pilot thermophilic anaerobic digestion plant was installed at one of eThekwini’s Wastewater Treatment Works to determine the feasibility of thermophilic anaerobic digestion as a method of advanced sludge stabilization. The main aspects of this project is to find methods to increase solids reduction to reduce transport and disposal costs, improve the sludge quality for beneficial re-use, and to maximise the biogas production for a higher energy recovery. The ease of operability of a thermophilic anaerobic digestion process will also be looked at.
