Dr Santiago Septien Stringel obtained a chemical engineering degree (BscEng and MscEng) with a specialization in wastewater treatment. After this degree, he pursued his professional career with a PhD on biomass gasification in 2011 and performed a post-doctorate in the same domain for two more years, in French research institutes (CEA Grenoble and Mines-Albi). During this period, he acquired an expertise in thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, gasification, combustion) and biofuels.
In 2014, he joined the WASH R&D Centre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal to supervise master research projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Water Research Commission.
Currently, his main tasks are to lead research related to decentralized sanitation treatment systems, give support and advice to sanitation practitioners and supervise undergraduate / postgraduate students. His main expertise has become thermal processes for sanitation applications (thermal drying, solar drying, biochar generation) and characterization of faecal sludge (physiochemical properties, rheology, stickiness).
He has also explored other areas of research, such as photocatalysis, dewatering and membrane technologies.
