Project summary

This CRART proposed project is a direct response to the need of a locally developed IOT real-time water monitoring and pollution assessment system. For example, emergencies such as crude oil spillage to the Umgeni River, flooding from weather storms into Inanda dam, discharge of industrial effluent into the Vaal River, discharge of wastewater effluent into the Vaal dam, and discharge of mining effluent into Oliphant’s river, etc. severely affect the quality of drinking water, water courses and marine water, and require immediate response. The project aims to develop a practical remote water monitoring and reporting product. The system would collect data from sensors (temperature, ph., conductivity, chemical sensors etc.) deployed in a water body (including rugged environments) and wirelessly transmit sensed data to the control room where it is managed by the developed software application. The developed system will help to monitor, provide alerts, real time data, data analysis and reporting in water pollution, waste water management, coastal marine water management, water fingerprinting and other diverse areas including water COVID epidemiology surveillance systems. The system hub will be able to adapt to monitoring new parameters that can be delivered as a result of the advancement of electronic sensor technology for measuring different parameters. At the moment there is no practical local solution similar to the system to be developed and an internationally accepted solution is still non-existent. This will be a pioneering solution.
